There are several techniques of painting on silk, the most common among them are painting with outliner (‘cold batik’) and freehand painting. ‘Cold batik’ is done by the method of cold reserving when special composition (outliner) is applied to textile in advance to prevent penetration of colors into the fibers of textile and their spreading. More often it is used for outline drawing. The technique of freehand painting is close to watercolor painting and requires skills in brush drawing without under drawing. It displays creative style and talent of the artist. Colors are applied to textile with wide brush strokes without using an outliner.
GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF SILK PAINTING “COLD BATIK” Before painting textile needs washing and ironing and outline drawing should be done. Then silk should be stretched and fixed on a stretcher. Apply an outliner to a drawing and let it dry. Fill the space inside with colors. After full drying of the colors fix the drawing with a hot iron. For deleting the washable outliner, the finished painting needs washing.
